The Supreme Court has temporarily preserved nationwide access to the abortion pill mifepristone through mail delivery and telehealth appointments.

Justice Samuel Alito extended an emergency stay until Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the court reviews a request from drugmakers to block a lower court ruling that restricted remote access to the medication.

The case began in Louisiana, where officials argued federal regulators failed to properly study safety risks before removing the requirement for in-person doctor visits.

Drug manufacturers and public health groups strongly disagree, saying extensive reviews proved the drug is safe.
