The ruling stems from a lawsuit accusing Meta of deceiving Facebook users in New Mexico regarding who could access their data|@Meta|X

Meta was ordered by a New Mexico judge to pay $25 billion over a data privacy case, which relates to the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal involving the collection of Facebook users’ data.

A jury had found last month that Meta had violated the state’s consumer protection laws 43 million times, each punishable by a $5,000 fine. That put the potential penalty far above the $25 billion ultimately ordered by the judge.

Meta’s chief legal officer expressed confidence that the company would overturn the judgment on appeal.
