Former FBI Director James Comey is facing fresh criminal charges over alleged leaks of classified information to the media in 2016, adding to his ongoing legal battles with the Trump administration.

It is the third time the DOJ has charged Comey. Prosecutors have brought two charges against him in Washington, alleging he shared information about US email surveillance with a New York Times reporter.

Prosecutors claim the disclosure involved details from an internal government email. Comey has rejected the accusations and maintained his innocence.

The charges were made public after a federal judge approved the release of court documents.

Comey’s lawyers have asked the court to dismiss the case, arguing the prosecution was improperly initiated to avoid the legal deadline expiring.

The latest case follows separate proceedings involving Comey in North Carolina and Virginia.

The Virginia case, which accused him of lying to Congress, was dismissed over concerns about the prosecutor’s appointment. However, the Justice Department is attempting to revive it.
