Alongside criminalizing nonconsensual sharing, the legislation empowers victims to pursue civil action

Sharing digitally altered nude images of real people without their consent could become a federal crime.

New York Rep. Joseph Morelle reintroduced the Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act to outlaw the nonconsensual sharing of digitally fabricated nude images.

The move comes in response to an unsettling incident at Westfield High School in New Jersey, where boys made and distributed AI-generated nude images of female classmates without their consent. The bipartisan effort, along with Rep. Tom Kean, aims to tackle the rising threat of manipulated content facilitated by AI.

The proposed legislation not only criminalizes such sharing but also empowers victims to pursue civil action.
