The Supreme Court signaled significant skepticism on Wednesday regarding President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at ending the birthright citizenship of children born in the US.
Trump’s order, introduced on the first day of his second term, instructed the government to offer citizenship only to children who have at least one parent who is a US citizen or a permanent resident.
The policy challenges the long-standing interpretation of the 14th Amendment. It was blocked by several judges, and now the nation’s highest court is weighing whether Trump can limit the century-old law.
Several conservative justices joined their liberal colleagues in questioning the Trump administration’s logic behind the order.
Chief Justice John Roberts emphasized that while the modern world has changed, the Constitution remains the same. Justice Neil Gorsuch noted that a parent’s legal status was historically immaterial to the citizenship clause.
Trump attended approximately 90 minutes of arguments, marking the first time a sitting president has done so. He later wrote on Truth Social, “We are the only Country in the World STUPID enough to allow ‘Birthright’ Citizenship!”
