The Supreme Court will soon consider expanding President Donald Trump’s power to remove independent federal agency members, potentially overturning a 90-year-old ruling.

In a 6-3 decision on Monday, the court allowed Trump to fire FTC member Rebecca Slaughter while the case proceeded.

Justices Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor, and Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, warning that giving the president full control over independent agencies could politicize regulatory decisions.

The case could also affect other agencies, including the Federal Reserve, as Trump seeks broader authority. Arguments are expected in December.

The outcome could reshape US regulatory power, affecting the FTC, NLRB, MSPB, and other independent federal agencies responsible for consumer protection, labor relations, and federal employee oversight.
