President Donald Trump filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC on Monday, accusing the broadcaster of misleading viewers by editing a documentary about his speech before the January 6 Capitol Hill riot in 2021.

The suit, filed in Florida, claimed the edited footage damaged his reputation and harmed his personal brand.

The British network aired the documentary, Trump: A Second Chance?, days before the 2024 US presidential election. Trump says the program stitched together two parts of his speech in a way that suggested he encouraged violence, while leaving out his call for supporters to march peacefully.

Trump also alleges the BBC tried to influence the election and violated a consumer-protection law in Florida.

The BBC had apologized for the documentary edits in November and promised not to air it on any of its platforms. It disagrees with the defamation claim and plans to fight the lawsuit.
