A Manhattan jury on Friday ordered former President Donald Trump to pay over $83 million in damages for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll.

The jury’s decision follows a trial where Carroll accused Trump of damaging her reputation by denying her allegations of sexual assault during his presidency.

Carroll hailed it as a victory for women standing against mistreatment. She was granted $18.3 million in compensatory damages and an additional $65 million in punitive damages, citing Trump acted maliciously.

It is the second time Trump has been ordered to compensate Carroll. Last May he was ordered to pay $5 million for battery and defamation in a separate defamation suit filed by the writer.

Trump dismissed the verdict as “ridiculous” and plans to appeal. The trial could have implications as he seeks the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election.
