The UK government has signaled it may intervene in Paramount Skydance’s proposed $110 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, raising concerns about media ownership and competition.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the government is concerned that the merger could concentrate too much control over news and media in the hands of fewer companies. She has asked both firms to respond by July 6 before deciding whether to take action.
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority is also reviewing the deal’s impact on competition and plans to announce its next steps in early August.
Meanwhile, the Justice Department has already approved the merger, saying it is unlikely to harm competition or consumers. However, attorneys general in California and New York are still investigating the deal.
If completed, the merger would combine Paramount’s CBS and Paramount+ with Warner’s HBO, CNN, and more.
