It’s that time of the year when the music industry gears to celebrate the best. The 66th annual Grammy Awards will take place this Sunday. And here’s what you can expect.

Taylor Swift doesn’t have the most nominations
SZA leads this year with nine nominations. She’s up for Album of the Year for “SOS,” Record and Song of the Year for her chart-topper “Kill Bill,” plus six other nominations in the R&B and pop categories.

Phoebe Bridgers, Victoria Monet and audio engineer Serban Ghenea are the next most-nominated artists with seven nominations each.

That doesn’t stop Swift from aiming to break the record for the most number of Album of the Year wins by an artist. She is currently tied at three with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon.

African music
Grammy Awards will mark the first time that African music receives recognition as a standalone category, separate from the “Global Music” categories.

Despite African artists having won Grammys since 1966, this move highlights the growing popularity of Afrobeats in the US.

The five nominees for the inaugural Best African Music Performance include works by ASAKE & Olamide, Burna Boy, Davido ft. Musa Keys, Ayra Starr and Tyla.

There’s more
In the Record of the Year category, Billie Eilish faces competition, while Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” is noted for its Spotify success.

The Best New Artist category features Ice Spice and Monet as frontrunners, but Jelly Roll could also be recognized for his potential impact on country music.

Acclaimed actress Meryl Streep is nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording for her narration of the children’s book “Big Tree.” Winning would bring her closer to achieving EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) status.

Streep, who has won multiple Emmys and Oscars, has had seven Grammy nominations but never a win.

The 2024 Grammys will air live at 8 p.m. Eastern Time (5 p.m. Pacific Time) on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Comedian Trevor Noah will host the awards show for a fourth time.
