Music publishers are seeking $250 million in damages from Twitter for 1,700 alleged infringements|MatthewKeys|CC BY 3.0

Music companies are suing Twitter for $250 million, accusing the platform of copyright infringement.

The lawsuit highlights that the Bird app infringed on over 1,700 songs, allowing users to post copyrighted music without proper licenses.

Major music publishers, including Universal, Sony and Warner, are among the plaintiffs.

The lawsuit from National Music Publishers’ Association comes after years of unsuccessful negotiations between Twitter and the music industry for a licensing agreement.

The association claims that Twitter’s failure to take appropriate action has resulted in financial losses for the music industry.
