The number of anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures this year has already surpassed last year’s count. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) tracked 452 anti-LGBTQ bills as of April 8.
Just for comparison, a total of 361 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced by state legislators between 2018 and 2022.
The Majority of the anti-LGBTQ bills introduced this year, more than 200 bills, targeted sports and education. As ACLU puts it, these bills “are trying to prevent trans students from participating in school activities like sports, force teachers to out students, and censor any in-school discussions of LGBTQ people and issues.”
