Bill Pulte currently heads the Federal Housing Finance Agency and will replace Tulsi Gabbard as acting Director of National Intelligence

President Donald Trump has chosen Bill Pulte to lead the intelligence community, placing a close ally in one of the country’s most powerful national security roles.

Pulte currently heads the Federal Housing Finance Agency and will replace Tulsi Gabbard as acting Director of National Intelligence.

The office oversees 18 intelligence agencies, including the CIA and NSA, and serves as the president’s top intelligence adviser.  It also prepares daily security briefings for the White House.

The appointment has sparked criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, who question Pulte’s lack of national security experience and warn that intelligence operations could become more politicized.

Supporters argue that Trump selected a trusted ally capable of managing sensitive government responsibilities. Pulte will gain access to vast intelligence resources and national security data while leading the agency.

Under federal law, Pulte can serve as acting intelligence chief for up to 210 days without Senate confirmation.
