Republican candidate Donald Trump, who previously skipped the initial debate, aims to intercede in the ongoing labor standoff between striking autoworkers and the Detroit automakers|Public Domain

Former President Donald Trump will address over 500 autoworkers, including the striking UAW members next week, choosing to skip the second GOP debate.

Trump previously abstained from the first debate and this time intends to mediate in the current labor dispute between striking autoworkers and the Detroit Three—Ford, GM and Stellantis—rather than attend the second Republican presidential primary debate.

Why?
The decision emphasizes his effort to regain the support of working-class voters who shifted towards President Joe Biden in 2020. This move indicates Trump’s focus on a potential rematch with Biden in the general election.

Despite facing legal hurdles, Trump maintains a commanding lead of almost 50 points over his nearest GOP competitor in recent polls.

The GOP debate is on September 27 in California.
