Ex-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announces his departure from Congress by the end of this year|@SpeakerMcCarthy|X
Kevin McCarthy, the former House Speaker who faced a historic ouster from his position two months ago, announced his departure from Congress by the year-end, concluding a 17-year Congressional tenure.
The resignation comes just before California’s December 8 re-election filing deadline.
In a Wall Street Journal opinion, the Californian Republican highlighted his achievements and said he is “only getting started” in his next chapter.
His decision arrives amidst Congress grappling to pass crucial fiscal 2024 spending bills, risking a partial government shutdown if not adopted by January 19.
McCarthy’s departure further diminishes the already narrow House GOP majority, currently standing at 221-213 after the recent expulsion of Rep. George Santos.
McCarthy is the only speaker in history to be voted out of the job.
