Speaker Kevin McCarthy is still optimistic that the House might pass a funding extension in its voting session today|@SpeakerMcCarthy|X

With federal funding ending at 12:01 AM Sunday, hardline GOP members of the House rejected Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s short-term funding bill yesterday, making a partial government shutdown imminent.

What’s next?
McCarthy is still optimistic that the House might pass a funding extension in its voting session today. “It’s only a failure if you quit,” he told reporters.

The Senate is also expected to vote on a bipartisan bill to keep the government running till November 17.

Uncertainty prevails
More than 2 million federal employees, including ones in the army, national parks, schools and airports, could end up working without pay.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the government shutdown would “undermine” economic progress in the country, particularly affecting federal programs for small businesses and children.
