The Pentagon announced Tuesday it will withdraw 2,000 National Guard troops from Los Angeles, nearly half of those deployed amid protests over President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Around 4,000 Guard members and 700 Marines had been stationed since early June.
Officials didn’t explain the sudden end to the 60-day deployment.
California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the mission as political and said troops were pulled from wildfire-fighting duty.
Mayor Karen Bass welcomed the move, crediting peaceful protests and legal challenges.
Protesters had clashed with law enforcement during the deployment, which is still being reviewed by courts for legality under the Posse Comitatus Act.
