President Donald Trump warned he’ll impose an additional 10% tariff on countries aligning with what he calls the “Anti-American policies of BRICS.”

His statement came as BRICS leaders met in Brazil and criticized “unilateral protectionist measures,” referencing US trade policies.

Trump’s threat, posted on Truth Social, didn’t specify which BRICS policies triggered the move. The bloc consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Iran.

Former US trade negotiator Stephen Olson said Trump may view BRICS as undermining the US-led global order. China opposed Trump’s threat, calling tariffs a coercive tool.

Meanwhile, Trump confirmed letters detailing country-specific tariff rates would be sent on Monday.

US to reinstate steep tariffs on August 1
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US will resume steep country-specific tariffs on August 1, following a 90-day pause. Trump initially set a July 9 deadline for countries to renegotiate the April 2 “Liberation Day” tariff rates, which range from 10% to 70%.

Only the UK and Vietnam have secured deals so far.
