Renewed proposal comes as the Supreme Court reviews whether President Donald Trump’s tariffs were legally imposed|@WhiteHouse|X

President Donald Trump has again proposed paying a $2,000 dividend to most Americans, funded by billions collected through tariffs.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump claimed the US is taking in trillions of dollars and vowed to use the funds to reduce the nation’s $37 trillion debt while boosting investment in factories and plants nationwide.

His renewed proposal comes as the Supreme Court reviews whether Trump’s tariffs were legally imposed, with justices expressing concern that they functioned as taxes rather than emergency trade measures.

If the court rules the tariffs illegal, the government could face refunds exceeding $100 billion to importers.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent defended the tariffs, stating that they were intended to rebalance trade, not raise revenue. The court’s decision remains pending.
