The NYPD detained two people on Saturday after “suspicious devices” were ignited during protests outside Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Authorities said the incident occurred while a demonstration led by conservative influencer Jake Lang and a counterprotest took place nearby.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officers saw devices that looked like jars wrapped in black tape and filled with nuts, bolts, and screws.
Investigators are still determining whether the items were real improvised explosive devices or hoaxes. Bomb squad teams removed the devices for testing.

The FBI’s joint terrorism task force has reportedly joined the investigation.
