A Paris-based high-fashion label is making waves on the red carpet for its name, alien-like styling, and critique of industry waste.
Matieres Fecales, which translates to “Fecal Matter,” was started 10 years ago in Canada by two College LaSalle Montreal students, Steven Raj Bhaskaran and Hannah Rose Dalton. The duo chose the provocative name to criticize the fashion industry’s waste and excess.
They first built a cult following on the second-hand fashion marketplace Depop, where they showcased their edgy designs. Their growing popularity eventually earned them a spot at Paris Fashion Week in 2024.
Now they have gone mainstream with several celebrity endorsements. Zendaya wore their winged gown at The Odyssey premiere, Demi Moore picked a pink, tattered ball gown for Cannes, Lady Gaga was seen in one of their pieces at the Grammys, and Kylie Jenner chose their pajamas to star in a Dunkin’ ad.
For now, all eyes are on the brand’s next show at Paris Fashion Week in September.
