Louisiana had the highest share of people leaving for the second year in a row, followed by West Virginia and Wyoming
Arkansas, Idaho, and North Carolina saw the biggest inflow of new residents in 2025, based on an Atlas Van Lines review of about 107,000 interstate moves.
Even though high home prices and mortgage rates have made moving more difficult, some people are still packing up for lower living costs, better jobs, safer climates, or to be closer to family.
Arkansas stood out in particular. Nearly two in five people who moved there chose Bentonville, the city where Walmart is headquartered.
Other places that drew newcomers included Hawaii, Washington, DC, Tennessee, Washington state, and Alabama.
Meanwhile, Louisiana had the highest share of people leaving for the second year in a row, followed by West Virginia and Wyoming. Fewer residents moved out of California, Illinois, and New York, but more people still left than arrived.
Experts warn that Americans are moving far less than before. Many homeowners feel locked into low mortgage rates, since moving now would mean monthly payments jumping by about 73%.
