UnitedHealth Group disclosed Thursday that it’s under both criminal and civil investigation by the Department of Justice over its Medicare Advantage billing practices.
The DOJ is reportedly probing whether UnitedHealth inflated patient diagnoses to secure higher payments and pressured doctors into submitting certain claims.
While the company had previously denied being under investigation, it has now confirmed DOJ involvement and launched a third-party review, expected to conclude by year-end.
UnitedHealth is facing a stormy year
Its shares are down 42% and its 2025 outlook was scrapped due to soaring medical costs. The company has weathered a cyberattack, management shakeup, and even the murder of its UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
