A YouTube series’s viewership is raising eyebrows and dividing opinions. The animated show Skibidi Toilet is captivating the hearts (and screens) of Generation Alpha—those born between the early 2010s to 2020s.
Created by 25-year-old animator Alexey Gerasimov for his channel DaFuq?Boom!, the series pits toilets with human heads against humans with CCTV heads, speakers and TV heads in a dystopian world.
The quirky clash has amassed over 65 billion views on YouTube and sparked over 15.3 million TikTok hits, generating countless memes and appearances on Instagram.
Skibidi Toilet’s unorthodox success challenges traditional entertainment norms. The 60-second or less short format show marks one of the first major Gen Alpha trends on YouTube, says the company’s culture and trends manager Maddy Buxton.
However, Gen Z is not feeling it. Several express their disconnect through reaction videos and memes about the show. They humorously describe some children’s obsession over the show as “Skibidi Toilet syndrome.”
The show signifies a changing landscape in which Gen Z is no longer the sole driver of online culture.
