The flame for the 2024 Paris Olympics was ceremonially lit in Olympia, Greece, on Tuesday, in the stadium where the earliest recorded Olympics were held in 776 BC.

Actors lit the torch, which will travel across Greece over 11 days before reaching the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens and will finally make its way to Paris.

Greek Olympic gold medalist rower Stefanos Ntouskos is the first torchbearer.

Over the years, Olympic torch relays have seen adventurous journeys, including space travel and scaling Mount Everest.

The Paris Olympics are anticipated to be grand, with a unique opening ceremony along the River Seine. However, due to security concerns, attendance capacity has been halved. There’s a possibility of moving the ceremony to a stadium.

Olympic truce
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed intentions to revive the Olympic Truce recently.

It is an ancient Games tradition in Greece to briefly pause all wars to allow the Olympics to take place.

Not just Macron, the UN has also tried to promote the ideals of the Olympic Truce since 1993 but with limited success.

Coming back to sports, this Olympics marks the first time that a sport—track and field—will have prize money, with World Athletics saying it will pay $50,000 to gold medalists in Paris.
