Temperatures soared to 91 degrees Fahrenheit in London on Monday, marking Wimbledon's hottest start ever. Players used ice towels while spectators opened umbrellas for shade at the All England Club.
While defending champion Carlos Alcaraz beat Italian Fabio Fognini on Centre Court, the game was stopped for 15 minutes after a woman in the stands needed medical attention. She was later reported in stable condition.
Wimbledon applied its heat rule, allowing players to take 10-minute breaks during their matches.
Tuesday is expected to be even hotter before simmering down mid-week. Tennis fans can expect long matches and are advised to stay shaded and hydrated.
Wimbledon’s hottest day on record was July 1, 2015, when temperatures reached 96.3 degrees Fahrenheit.
