The IOC provisionally ended its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, potentially paving the way for Russian athletes to compete under their national flag at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Russia had been suspended from participating in the Olympics since 2016 for state-sponsored doping and the invasion of Ukraine. But the IOC changed its stance after concluding that the Russian Olympic Committee had met the conditions required to regain recognition.

IOC president Kirsty Coventry said, “We don’t want to hold athletes accountable for the actions of their governments.”

In recent years, only 27 Russian athletes have competed at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, following strict vetting procedures.

FIFA, UEFA, and World Athletics maintain their bans on Russia.
