President Donald Trump waved the green flag at the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, which saw cars zipping at 180 mph around a 1.7-mile circuit on the National Mall.
Florida native Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global secured a historic victory, completing 147 laps.
The IndyCar race was part of the US’s 250th anniversary celebrations, which also featured a UFC fight at the White House. Organizers estimated that the event attracted 140,000 spectators each day and generated about $210 million in tourism revenue.
Penske Corp., IndyCar owner, organized the race with a Trump-aligned group.
However, the race also caused disruptions across the capital. Local authorities closed several roads, creating traffic congestion, while flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were paused for several hours.
