Billionaire venture capitalist Vinod Khosla and his family have sealed a $9.6 billion deal to buy the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks from the estate of late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
The transaction honors the legacy of Allen, who originally purchased the franchise in 1997 for just $194 million. Following his passing in 2018, ownership transferred to his estate.
The NFL team’s worth is the third-highest valuation for any sports team deal in history, trailing only the sales of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Las Vegas Raiders, according to Axios.
To finalize the agreement, NFL owners will be meeting in August for official approval. As a condition of the purchase, Khosla must divest his current limited partnership stake in another Super Bowl champion, the San Francisco 49ers.
