Zuck wants to decentralize AI

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shared his vision for the future of artificial intelligence, saying advanced AI should be available to as many people as possible.

In a 6,500-word essay published on Monday, he argued that AI should empower individuals rather than allow a few powerful companies to control the technology. Zuckerberg said the technology should be guided by users’ values rather than those of AI labs, with robust privacy controls and broad free access. He also advocated for open-source models that individuals can modify.

Zuck sees open-source AI as a way to put powerful tools in more hands and keep Silicon Valley competitive with China. He defended AI model distillation, which allows developers to learn from existing models.

According to him, Meta plans to give billions of people free or affordable access to AI. He also suggested charging users who need more computing power through a pricing system designed to keep costs low.

He believes AI could become a personal assistant that helps people with everyday needs, including careers, finances, health and relationships. Zuck believes the tech could create new types of work and help people and businesses achieve more with fewer resources.

AI safety advocates warn that open-source models could make it easier for bad actors to misuse the technology. Zuck responded by calling for government oversight of AI models during training.

Meanwhile, Meta introduced Muse Glimmer, an open-weight AI model that people can download and run on their own PCs and Macs.

The tech giant plans to release more open AI models and create a $1 billion fund for communities affected by its growing data-center operations.

The company is investing heavily in the tech as it competes with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
