OpenAI is making the largest purchase in its history. The tech company will acquire io, an AI device startup by iPhone designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion.
The announcement made yesterday by ChatGPT-maker’s CEO, Sam Altman, signals his intention to enter hardware. So far, AI is seen as an app on phones. With the deal, Altman and Ive are trying to usher in “a new family of products” for the age of artificial general intelligence (AGI).
In a post on X, Altman said that the two will try to create “a new generation of AI-powered computers.”
