ChatGPT maker OpenAI is producing a feature-length animated film, Critterz, using AI tools to speed up production and cut costs, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The movie, about forest creatures on an adventure, is expected in theaters worldwide next year.
Chad Nelson, who began designing the characters three years ago, teamed up with London’s Vertigo Films and Los Angeles’ Native Foreign to complete the movie in nine months—much faster than the typical three-year schedule.
The budget is under $30 million, far below standard animated film costs.
Artists will create sketches, while AI tools, including GPT-5 generate the visuals. Human actors will voice the characters.
OpenAI aims to show that AI can produce high-quality content, lower entry barriers, and accelerate Hollywood’s adoption of generative technology.
