Uber and Wayve Technologies will begin testing fully self-driving vehicles on London roads, marking a major step in the ride-hail service’s plan to bring autonomous cars to Europe.
London is chosen for its complex roads and unique traffic rules, which differ from US test cities and provide better conditions to improve the technology.
Uber stopped developing its own driverless taxis years ago and now partners with companies like Wayve and Waymo.
Wayve’s AI, called Embodied AI, helps cars understand and learn from real-world human behavior.
Trials will launch in partnership with the UK government. These tests could pave the way for broader European expansion and app-based autonomous ride services.
