Tasmanian shipbuilder Incat launched the world’s largest electric ship, calling it a “giant leap forward in sustainable shipping.” The vessel known as Hull 096 and named China Zorrilla measures 130 meters in length.

Built for South American ferry operator Buquebus, the ship can carry 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. It will operate between Argentina and Uruguay.

Equipped with over 250 tons of batteries, it can run for 90 minutes on a full charge. Recharging takes just 40 minutes, with charging infrastructure to be installed at both ports.

Experts see the initiative as a crucial step toward the electrification of larger vessels, such as cargo and container ships.
