International vacations are being replaced by domestic road trips, shorter stays, or fewer visits to popular attractions

Travel costs are climbing, and Americans are adjusting how they vacation. Prices for gas, lodging, and recreation have surged since 2019, with overall travel up 20%, according to the Travel Association and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Restaurant meals alone have jumped more than 30%.

Scaling back plans

Rising costs for lodging, food, and transportation are forcing people to rethink how much they can spend on leisure.

Some travelers are discovering creative ways to enjoy vacations closer to home, like camping in secluded areas or visiting less crowded destinations.
