Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has warned that the world is not ready for the disruption artificial intelligence could bring to jobs, politics, and the economy.
In a new 12-page essay, the Microsoft co-founder wrote, “AI will either be the greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice.” He argued that governments, businesses and communities are not preparing quickly enough for the changes ahead.
“There is no plan to ease the entry into the AI era,” he commented, adding, “We need time to prepare for the social, political, and economic upheaval.”
Jobs face growing pressure
Gates said AI could quickly replace many entry- and mid-level roles while eventually affecting blue-collar workers. Industries including law, customer service, software and manufacturing could see major changes within a decade.
The threat is different from previous technological transitions, he said, which took generations and largely created tools that complemented human thinking rather than replacing it.
“This would be the worst possible time for humans to lose their critical thinking skills,” Gates wrote, citing deepfakes and AI chatbots.
He also warned that AI could increase cyberattacks, fraud, surveillance and misinformation while weakening critical thinking.
Gates called for new national agencies and an international body to manage AI risks and coordinate policies on employment, education, healthcare, taxation and security.
He also urged countries to reserve certain roles for humans, especially jobs requiring empathy and care. Gates called for international cooperation on AI rules, including collaboration between the US and China.
Despite his concerns, Gates said AI could deliver major benefits in healthcare, agriculture and education if societies manage the transition responsibly.
