The ChatGPT bot witnessed a steep decline in traffic when schools and colleges were out, according to data from AI platform OpenRouter.

During May’s finals season, ChatGPT use peaked at 97.4 billion tokens a day. But by June, daily averages dropped more than 50%, from 79.6 billion to 36.7 billion tokens.

Even weekends showed noticeable dips during the school year. This suggests how much students and academics rely on ChatGPT and other AI bots.

Past studies and third-party traffic data have also shown the same seasonal swings, with ChatGPT queries plummeting in summer and rebounding when classes resume.

The data comes as educators warn of a deepening literacy crisis in America, with several noting that kids are leaning on AI instead of books.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT maker OpenAI is reportedly exploring a massive new data center in India as part of its $500 billion Stargate AI infrastructure project. The move comes despite ongoing trade tensions between Washington and New Delhi.

CEO Sam Altman may announce details during his upcoming visit to India.
