ChatGPT maker OpenAI showcased its first custom-built chip, named Jalapeno, manufactured in collaboration with Broadcom on Wednesday. It follows the companies’ partnership in October.
Designed specifically for OpenAI’s inference systems, Jalapeno aims to accelerate the company’s machine-learning workloads and improve the efficiency of its AI models. OpenAI said the chip was developed with assistance from its own AI systems.
While Jalapeno remains in the testing phase, early results for the chip indicate significantly better performance per watt than current state-of-the-art alternatives.
The project aims to reduce OpenAI’s dependence on Nvidia’s GPUs, which dominate the AI hardware market. Other major technology companies, including Google and Amazon, have also built similar custom chips to reduce reliance on the same.
