AI startup Perplexity has offered $34.5 billion to buy Google’s Chrome browser, a bid far exceeding its own $18 billion valuation, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The offer comes as US District Judge Amit Mehta weighs potential antitrust remedies after ruling last year that Google illegally monopolized search. Perplexity framed the proposal as a public-interest solution, pledging to keep Chrome open-source.
Chrome, with 3.5 billion users and over 60% market share, is valued between $20 billion and $50 billion.
Meanwhile, Anthropic is matching and expanding on OpenAI’s recent government offer, announcing it will provide its Claude AI models to “all three branches” of the US government for $1 per agency for one year.
The move follows OpenAI’s similar $1-per-agency deal for the executive branch.
