In a Politico interview, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said, “We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology.”

His comment came when Altman was asked whether rapidly advancing technology could become increasingly unpredictable.

He also noted that the ChatGPT maker diverges from Anthropic regarding AI regulation.

Altman stressed that AI should be broadly accessible to the public and that the tech's positive outcomes will outweigh the negative ones. He also rejects catastrophic risks like a total loss of control over AI.

Meanwhile, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has often emphasized AI safety and regulation, and even a coordinated slowdown in developing the technology.

Against a backdrop of rising AI incidents and hacks, OpenAI joined Anthropic in backing tougher safety measures, from stricter state laws to a bipartisan House proposal requiring leading AI firms to employ independent safety evaluators.

Politico was one of the outlets. Altman has stepped up media appearances in recent weeks to address growing concerns about AI among the public and investors.

The media appearances also come as a leader on OpenAI’s safety team quit over safety concerns.
