USPS’s proposal needs clearance from the Postal Regulatory Commission|Mike Mozart|CC BY 2.0

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has sought a temporary 8% price increase for Priority Mail and package deliveries, effective April 26. The move aims to cover rising fuel and transportation costs.

The proposal still needs approval from the Postal Regulatory Commission. Officials said the increase will not change first-class stamp prices.

The agency added that rivals FedEx and UPS have already added fuel surcharges of up to 28% to their air and ground deliveries since the Iran war.

The price hike could stay until early 2027. USPS warned it may run out of money by October and has lost $118 billion since 2007 as traditional mail use continues to fall.
