The chip shortage had forced automakers like Honda to halt production across North America

China will start easing export restrictions on semiconductors made by Nexperia, a Chinese-owned, Netherlands-based automotive chipmaker, the White House has said.

The move is part of a trade deal struck between the US and China.

Nexperia had halted exports for weeks after the Dutch government’s seizure of it from its Chinese parent company, Wingtech, which is on a US trade blacklist.

The company produces essential diodes and transistors used in hundreds of automotive components. The shortage had already forced automakers like Honda to halt production across North America.

The dispute highlights how China’s control over mature semiconductor production can impact the auto industry globally.
