The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday saw many firsts. Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae becoming the first Asian to win the lead actor award in a drama was one of them.

The South Korean won the Emmy for playing the main role of Seong Gi-hun in the hit Netflix show, whose creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, also became the first Asian to win the best drama series director award.

Zendaya, the star of HBO’s “Euphoria,” became the first black woman to win an Emmy twice in the lead actress category in a drama series for playing teenage drug addict Rue. She had also won the same award for the role in 2020.

“Anyone who has loved a Rue or feels like they are a Rue—I want you to know I’m so grateful for your stories, and I carry them with me, and I carry them with her,” she said.

HBO night
HBO dominated the night, winning in 12 of the 25 categories. The television network’s “Succession” won the outstanding drama series award for a second year running. The series’ cast member Matthew Macfadyen, who plays the interloper Tom Wambsgans, won the best supporting actor prize.

It is a “bonkers gift of a role,” Macfadyen said on stage.

Hotel satire “The White Lotus” picked up 10 awards, including the best limited series, best writing, best directing, best supporting actor for Murray Bartlett and best supporting actress for Jennifer Coolidge.

Comedy
Apple TV+’s sitcom “Ted Lasso” reigned supreme in the comedy category, winning the award for best comedy series, with its star Jason Sudeikis picking up the best actor prize.
