A massive 245-kilogram Pacific bluefin tuna set a record on Monday’s auction at Tokyo’s popular Toyosu fish market, selling for approximately $3.2 million.
The prized fish was caught off the Oma coast in northern Japan, a region known for producing the best tuna for sushi and sashimi.
The record-breaking purchase was secured by Kiyoshi Kimura, the owner of the Sushi Zanmai chain, who successfully surpassed his own previous record of $2.1 million set in 2019.
Pacific bluefin tuna were once a threatened species due to overfishing, but their stocks are currently on a path to recovery thanks to rigorous international conservation efforts.
