DoorDash has offered $17 billion to acquire Instacart, aiming to consolidate the grocery delivery industry and better compete with rivals like Amazon and Walmart.
The acquisition could be completed by late 2027 or early 2028, subject to approval from Instacart shareholders, and would unite America’s largest restaurant delivery service and biggest online grocery platform.
Instacart users will gain access to thousands of additional stores, while the deal will bring both memberships under one subscription.
Last year, DoorDash processed more than 3 billion orders across 40 countries, supported by 9 million delivery workers. Meanwhile, Instacart fulfilled 338 million orders through 600,000 shoppers.
Walmart currently accounts for 21% of US grocery spending, while Costco and Amazon each hold an 8% share.
