A burst pipe at the Louvre due to last week’s flooding has damaged hundreds of tomes in the Egyptian antiquities department’s library.

Roughly 400 books, archaeology journals, and other works dating back to the 1800s have been damaged as staff try to catalogue and work to save the items.

The area of the flooding was scheduled for maintenance and renovations beginning in September 2026.
