To curb the rising number of crimes involving homeless people, Mayor Eric Adams asked New York City officials to hospitalize people suffering from severe mental illness from the city's streets.

The move will hospitalize even those who don’t pose a threat to the city and provide them with extended care. The Mayor’s move would keep patients in hospitals until they are stable and discharge them only if there is a plan to connect them to ongoing care.
