DHS extends the deadline for Real ID from 2023 to May 7, 2025|dhs.gov

If you don’t have a Real ID, the government is giving you two more years to get one. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has pushed the 2023 deadline to May 7, 2025.

The DHS extended the deadline Monday citing delay and backlog in processing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The extension comes with stricter requirements for domestic air travel.

According to the DHS, only 43% of state driver’s licenses and ID cards are Real ID-compliant in 2021.

How to find out if your ID is Real or not?
If your ID doesn't have a star or a bear, in the case of California, on the upper right corner, it’s not a REAL ID.

Civilians are required to obtain a Real ID before the DHS deadline to travel on domestic flights. To obtain the Real ID, one must submit documentation proof of name and date of birth, social security number, residential address, and immigration status.
