Congress has included additional protection for interracial marriages in the ‘Respect for Marriage Act’ that would reach the House for approval today.

The Act, passed by the Senate with a 61-36 vote last week, would protect the rights to same-sex and interracial marriage. The legislation, if approved, would require states to recognize these marriages and also grant them benefits like Medicare and Social Security.

The act would ensure additional protection for interracial marriage—a huge relief for couples—even though the practice has gained widespread support in recent years.
