Civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson has died at 84 following a battle with progressive supranuclear palsy.
He fought alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for DEI and voting rights and assumed a leading role in the Civil Rights Movement after his assassination.
He advocated for social and economic justice, and in the 1980s, ran twice for the presidency.
His Rainbow Coalition—an ambitious alliance of Black, White, Latino, Asian American, Native American and LGBTQ communities—helped lay the groundwork for a more progressive Democratic Party.
He was a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
His family said he “died peacefully.”
